All the customary disclaimers, still ...
A Pew Research Center poll, taken yesterday, shows Obama's job approval jumping to 56 percent (from 47 percent, in April), and his net disapproval plunging from 50 to 38 percent.
Most dispiriting to Republicans, I would think, was the aggregate response to the question: "Do you approve or disapprove of the way Obama is handling the threat of terrorism?" A whopping 69 percent approved.
Should the economy continue its upward trajectory and, along with it, gas prices level out, you won't be able to find a bookie with enough offsetting bets at even astronomical odds to take yours on Obama.
Well, I always remember that Jimmy Carter's approval ratings doubled overnight merely because the embassy hostages were taken in Iran.
George H. W. Bush of course had sky-high approval ratings after the Gulf War.
This may prove to be a good solid bounce, or it may evaporate rather quickly.
One of the things I admire about Obama is that, thus far, he hasn't sought to milk terrorist attempts or military actions for their political benefits (unlike the last administration).
We'll see if that continues.
He may be faced with either doing that--and becoming what he does not want to be--or losing the election.
