A few days back I speculated that Newt Gingrich's historical model of politics was Georgia's notoriously racist demagogue, Tom Watson. I was so wrong. According to the Washington Post, Gingrich's historical model of politics was Georgia's notoriously racist demagogue, Eugene Talmadge.
I would say that another strong influence on Gingrich was Governor Lester Maddox. I remember Maddox and his over the top rhetoric and tactics. I remember hearing and seeing him say things that any so-called Christian would have run away from as fast as he/she could, but they didn't--they elected him governor. Being that I was a young black teen at the time, just a few years away from entering UGA in 1971, I can still recall the racial animus that oozed from his every word and deed. IMO, he did irreparable damage to race relations in GA, and it has existed until this very day.
