The following dynamic, related by a Gingrich "supporter" to Politico, reveals the intensity of modern conservatism's internal, almost incestuous splits, divisions, disaffections and petty grievances:
I think [Newt's] getting out now benefits Santorum. If that hurts Romney, fine. My trouble is, I would hate to see Santorum get the nomination.
The beauty of this supporter's fastidiousness is twofold: He or she is not alone in the roiling bitterness of the once Grand Old Party, and there exists the most excellent possibility that rather than vote for the detested Mitt Romney in November, he or she will just stay home. That'll show 'em.
Don't count on it. I think that "they" are obsessed with defeating Obama.

For a not insignificant portion of the GOP base, voting for a Mormon would be just as bad as voting for a Muslim.
