I just turned on C-Span's BookTV and there I was greeted by a dwarfish, flabby, grinning right winger mocking "liberals," whom he "studies like Jane Goodall studied her chimps--in their natural habitat." The audience found this delightful. Rippling giggles.
Who are liberals? he asked. Oh, you know them, he answered, going through a hackneyed list--the college professor, the underemployed gender studies major, all the usual human cliches. This, too, tickled the audience to no end. More snickers abounded.
My first thought in response to his question was that liberals could be defined quite simply as people who are emotionally, spiritually and intellectually sick to death of right-wing cretins who appear with such increasing and frightening frequency on BookTV.
Have actual thinkers simply stopped writing books and requesting at least equal, C-Span airtime?
The subliterate dwarf--I look up and see that his name is Gallagher, his book: "50 Things Liberals Love to Hate"--is speaking at the Richard M. Nixon Library, by the way. Now there's a monument to conservative, American values.
The Nixon Library is near where I live so I'm fairly familiar with the place. I think it's entirely appropriate that the speaker was there stereotyping liberals in front of a friendly audience. There concept of what a liberal is dates back to the Nixon administration.
