Every couple days, like clockwork, I realize it's been a couple days since Mitt Romney's last gaffe, and bam, like Old Faithful, there he goes. His regularity is really quite extraordinary, a kind of perverse national treasure.
Romney's commitment to this infamous 48-hour limit came today--ding ding ding--on Fox News in response to a question about his acceptance speech's Afghanistan omission:
When you give a speech you don’t go through a laundry list, you talk about the things that you think are important.
Romney preceded that nationally televised display of galloping insensitivity with some vintage Romneyesque testiness (followed, of course, by that evil little laugh): "I only regret you’re repeating [the accusation] day in and day out."
As I said, a real treasure.
Why is it that when Joe Biden makes a gaffe it makes him more human (and to me sometimes more adorable) but when Mitt Romney makes them he just comes off as an insensitive jerk on a good day? "Corporations are people", "I enjoy firing people", "I'm not concerned about the very poor", etc. He gets creepier and creepier by the day.

There should be a new beer commercial based on Mitt: Mitt Romney: The most insufferable man in the world.

AnneJ, because Romney's aren't really gaffes, they are windows into his soul.
He tried to cover up by saying that he did talk about keeping a strong military that Obama wanted to destroy and "military" is the same as "troops.' Someone on another blog said that is a perfectly reasonable explanation.
Of course it isn't and I can tell you one gtroup of people that won't buy that explanation: the troops themselves.
I suspect that those pro-Obama vet groups are going to make hay with this one and it could reduce the military vote for Romney by up to 10%.

If a Democrat had said this, even if they were a veteran like John Kerry, there would already be calls ringing from the right-wing media and GOP politicans to try the bastard for treason.
But, as with most things, IOKIYAR.
I saw someone else comment that Romney views the military as one more line item - there is no human face to it.
I simply can't imagine this soulless shell of a man welcoming veterans home or comforting the families of the fallen. Is he capable of showing any compassion whatsoever? I haven't seen it yet. I hope that matters to some people.

Unbelievable quote.
I liked a comment on the story I read about it:
"That's one area Romney never flip flops on, being an asshole."

I only regret that I have but one Romney to give for my country
