In CNN's reporting on its latest poll, the last cited surveyed item seems of first-rank importance in revealing why President Obama holds, and has consistently held, a measurable lead over his challenger even during this protracted era of economic sluggishness:
44% of voters say they have achieved the American dream and 42% say they will do so eventually.
There exists for us essentially materialistic and thus roundly conservative Americans no holier grail than The American Dream. And when 86 percent of us say we've already achieved it or "eventually"--we being optimists as well, that means soon--will, then the presiding chief executive has at least half his reelection battle pre-won.
Except for old folks like me - who have had it easy and received much, but who know that there is very little chance of our children and grandchildren even enjoying basic freedoms under Democratic ideologies, much less prosperity. Though I have done so before in the 1970's, I have grown up a little, and I will probably never vote for a Democrat again.
