Jonathan Chait notes that Paul Ryan, notwithstanding his humiliation yesterday, "is still an extremely skilled bullshitter — vastly better at it than Romney." No doubt Chait wrote that before reading Mitt Romney's Middle East op-ed in the Wall Street Journal. A snippet:
President Obama has allowed our leadership to atrophy. Our economy is stuck in a "recovery" that barely deserves the name. Our national debt has risen to record levels. Our military, tested by a decade of war, is facing devastating cuts thanks to the budgetary games played by the White House. Finally, our values have been misapplied—and misunderstood—by a president who thinks that weakness will win favor with our adversaries.
But here's Romney's unscrubbed, rough-draft version--smuggled to this site by David Corn's video-waiter--before bullshitting it up:
Jesus how I wish we Republicans could once again write with straight faces that we have yet another Democratic president who [insert the villain's name] President Obama has allowed our leadership to atrophy. But dammit we don't, so we have to make this shit up as we go. Such as, Our economy is stuck in a "recovery" that barely deserves the name, thanks to the current mobocracy of cutthroat congressional Republicans. Our national debt has risen to record levels, thanks to a seemingly endless series of fiscally reckless Republican presidents, who I would promptly take after. Our military, tested by a decade of utterly avoidable and needlessly costly war, is facing devastating cuts thanks to the budgetary games played by see "cutthroats" the White House. Finally, and we have no idea how to sell this crankyass horseshit, after bin Laden and all our values have been misapplied--and misunderstood--by a president who thinks that weakness will win favor with our adversaries and Christ I wish he'd show me some.
