When John Sununu malignly dismissed Colin Powell's policy-based preference yesterday, he also unwittingly suggested a broader, profound truth: "[Y]ou have to wonder whether that’s an endorsement based on issues or whether he’s got a slightly different reason for preferring President Obama."
Because there's this, from the latest Washington Post/ABC News tracking poll: "Obama ... trail[s] Republican Mitt Romney 60 percent to 37 percent among whites."
What, have whites, wholly independent of their skin color or Barack Obama's or Mitt Romney's, noticed virtues in the latter which minorities have somehow missed? Are whites observing a worsening economy as others are watching quite real and vivid improvements in play? Do white people miraculously comprehend a vibrant Romney economic plan--and only minorities see dead proposals?
Or could it be that many whites have "a slightly different reason for preferring" Mitt Romney?
To understand this phenom one must first understand authoritarian personality syndrome, and submission to authority.
This is the key to understanding why populations will vote their fear before their own economic, or social interests. Fear is primal, and can override education and intellect of many folk. Playing to those subconscience fears is what Authoritarian regimes have always done, and what the current GOP and corporate media have perfected to an art in this last decade.
