This may be a late night for others, but it won't be for me. I'm going to pull a Truman '48 and hit the hay early. Why not? At 8:51 p.m. Central, when New Hampshire went blue, I had heard enough good news-bad news for Obama-Romney; all the former in Obama's camp, all the latter in Romney's. Minutes later came news from Florida that Team Obama, already slightly ahead in the state, was still awaiting Obama precincts from Broward and Dade. Pure icing. In addition, once-close Senate races were dropping blue nearly by the minute.
One wonders. Will the GOP begin to see its wholly internal problems? I watched Fox for a while and mainly heard Tucker Carlson blaming Obama for running an "abortion" campaign under some unknown radar and then he blamed CBS News for concealing unfavorable Benghazi information. If Carlson is any indicator of GOPThink, they'll all be awash in their own misdirection for some time.
Yet Why? is the question. A child could accurately and rather easily analyze this thing. Romney was fatally flawed from the start, and wrapping himself in hardcore pseudoconservative dogma never helped. It doomed him. And he realized its ultimate effect too late. Nonetheless he had already buried his chances through alienating women and African Americans and Latinos, through insufferable lies, through secretly taped plutocratic pandering, through his veep choice (that act, particularly dumb), and through general awkwardness and a vast unsuitability for retail politics. The Biggest of Big Lies--the Jeep ad--was the final nail.
Given all that, what does Tucker decry? Benghazi. Unbelievable. Oh, and we should add George Will's truly bizarre, utterly warped EV prediction to the GOP's magnificent obsessions. That one really rocked me. There are other--many other--delusions to add as well, of course, from Dick Morris's to Karl Rove's. Some of these folks are beyond hope--hi Dick; but the others had best begin thinking aloud realistically, or it's permanent curtains for the GOP, pretty damn soon.
And for the life of me, I cannot understand why the GOP Establishment--whatever's left of it--would settle for an accelerated death, when it could either go out with some honor, or actually recapture its own party.
