Tennessee's soft-spoken, Tom Coburn-like, "reasonable," aw-shucks viper of a Republican senator, Bob Corker, says, according to The Hill, that his Dollar For Dollar Act, introduced yesterday, "would include $937 billion in savings from Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security"--"savings" meaning an elevation of eligibility ages and cuts in paid benefits--"with an equivalent, dollar-for-dollar hike to the debt ceiling."
Let me see if I understand this proposal, made by an esteemed member of the world's greatest deliberative body. To spare the nation irreparable economic calamity and lift the threat of worldwide repercussions that could easily surpass the turmoil and human suffering of the Great Depression, President Obama must promise to slash future safety nets so that Timothy Geithner can pay the bills which Bob Corker & Friends racked up--which, just to repeat for emphasis, are due no matter what.
Yes, I'm pretty sure I grasp the concept, although I can't say I approve. Of course should I ever decide to move to Tennessee and then seek a career in organized crime's extortion rackets as a United States senator, well, I'd reconsider my disapproval.
