I just this very minute started a new daily medication, whose accompanying, three-page pharmacological exegesis begins: "It is not known exactly how this medicine works."

If the truth is to be told, the pros don't really know how many medicines work, just what they do.

If aspirin were discovered today, it would take years before it was available, would be accompanied by at least a three-page insert, and would be sold by prescription only.
