Earlier today I read a piece in The American Conservative written by, what else, an American conservative, who kindly informed us that his patience with America's conservative party was exhausted. He couldn't take it anymore; the tea party's invasion of his beloved GOP was too much. He was bailing. His despair was indignant, his mood was dispositive, his epiphany--These guys are nuts!--final.
And rather than admiration, I felt embarrassment for the guy.
It took this--the shutdown etc.--for a self-referential conservative to appreciate that modern conservatism is both criminally insane and treasonous? Its food-stamp atrocity didn't do it for him? Or its hateful blockage of immigration reform? Or its persistent denials of straightforward science? Or its repudiation of textbook macroeconomics?
Or maybe its Goebbelsesque presidential campaign of late? Or its preceding Daffy Duck primaries? Or in general its Sarah Palins and Louie Gohmerts and Ted Cruzes and Mike Lees and Limbaughs and Hannitys and Becks and all their attendant armies of lunatics, crackpots, sociopaths, austerians, birthers, racists, nativists, gun-nuts, neofascists, misogynists, obscurantists, ignoramuses and thumpers?
All those were insufficient clues? Come on, fella, it really took this--a government shutdown and threats of default--to spike your disgust beyond the breaking point?
