In an interview with MSNBC, Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) just assured potential tourists that the U.S. capital is indeed safe, and just as soon as the police permit it, he'll perhaps stick his head out of his Senate office.
Only in America.
I don't understand mass news consumption. It now appears that the "perpetrator" was unarmed but dangerous--another victim of society's gross underfunding of competent treatment for the mentally ill. If there's a continuing story here, that's it. Yet the cable networks are indulging in endless loops of the victim-perpetrator's vehicular flight from the police, and no doubt they'll persist in such indulgence the night through, because for some reason the ratings dictate it. I'm not at all puzzled by its delivery; the reason for that--profit--is self-evident. I simply don't understand the news consumption itself--the demand.
