If China's news agency thinks the international community is "befuddled" and "highly agonized" at U.S. politico-fiscal shenanigans and thus primed to ponder a "de-Americanized world," it should try seeing things from our side, here at de-rationalized central.
Somehow representative democracy began working too well, thrusting the Republican House's majority into abject terror by a ghoulish minority backed by a populist diaspora of exceedingly motivated malice, while the Democratic Senate, bathed in traditions of deliberative rules, may drown us all in an undeliberative horror.
Says a former top side to Harry Reid: "If a determined band of nut jobs wants to take down the global economy, they could do it. Under Senate rules, we are past the point of no return--there’s not anything Reid or McConnell could do about it."
With its withholdings-of-consent options and its cloture votes on motions to proceed and its 30-hour post-cloture paralyses and then repeat cloture votes and repeat paralyses, the Senate's "deliberative" ghouls--or even, hello Ted Cruz, a singular moron--could easily push us well over Wednesday night's default line. As Bloomberg's Josh Green observes, "if Cruz decides to withhold [his] consent" to a Reid-McConnell deal, "then all bets are off."
Show of hands: How many here believe that Sen. Cruz, on the eve of his coronation as King of the Idiots, will quietly bow to rationality?
We are highly agonized but little befuddled. You, world, should proceed with your Operation De-Americanization, at least for the next few years, for this is what we've come to, and we know it.
