And so it begins. Mine, as I read that which follows, began with a furrowed and disbelieving brow, which grew to a rumbling chuckle, which soon spewed to a belly laugh.
From The Hill:
[M]any party strategists are gearing up to make the popular seniors' healthcare program the focus of races nationwide.
But House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the Democrats’ formula won't be so simple.
"This is an issue that emerged in this [NY] district," Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol....
But, she added, "Every race is a different one."
Once every century a party-defining issue rolls around -- 'Union and Freedom' for the Grand Old Party in the 19th century; in the 20th, for Democrats, a New Deal -- and this young century's political definition could have bounded out of the gate as one of continental caring, wrapped in the singular and explosively winning issue of "Medicare."
But instead we're told that "every race is a different one" -- which means muddle, fragmentation, and party indistinctiveness.
Because, you know, some districts have seniors, and others don't; and some districts have at-risk under-55s, and some districts don't.
Unbelievable? Nah. They're Democrats.
FYI - letter to 'Speaker' Pelosi (that I'm also sending to the WH and DNC leadership):
Speaker Pelosi (you always will be!),
While I understand the sentiment in 'every race is different' please don't muddle the exceptional opportunity for a unified, unrelenting message in every campaign, in every State, in 2012.
Simply, you, and every Democratic Party Leader and Candidate must be certain that "the official Republican plan is to destroy Medicare" are 8 words every American hears 1000s of times between now and Nov 2012.
Beyond that the simple mantra is a gift given to every Democratic candidate, to wit:
The Republicans promised jobs in 2010:
- instead they insisted on tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations
- instead they attacked collective bargaining
- instead they attacked education
- instead they attacked unemployment insurance
- instead they attacked women and girls
- instead they brought the Nation to the brink (or maybe went all in) of default on its debt
- instead they tried to KILL DADT
- instead they voted for GLOBAL WAR
Republican jobs created - ZERO
Republican pursuit of the destruction of America - ZERO - because Democrats stopped them.
Don't muddle; don't confuse - you have been given a gift by the Republicans voting (in House and Senate) to kill Medicare - make those 8 words above the overwhelming thought that passes through the heads of young and old alike.
Thank you,
Bob

Wonderful. I thought Pelosi got this stuff.

Where is the unity? I have to say that was indeed confusing.
Of course I have been a little upset with my dear NP since she gave Bibi so many standing ovations. She and Reid and another dems kicked Obama in the teeth on this one.
By the way, Lawrence O'Donnell did a fabulous piece last night about how badly Obama has been treated since his AIPac speech. It is not only the repugs, but the dems, as well as the Jewish Community. It is a really good piece. It is The Rewrite section of his program.
