Oh my, the saccharine-saturated mind of Peggy Noonan has in recent weeks--and by God those three words are a quote--"begun to worry about the basic competency of the administration."
OK, are you through laughing and scouring your memory banks for the last singular instance of Miss Peggy's confidence in this administration? Good, let us proceed.
I confess my own uninterrupted hostility toward the GWB administration, so in that I possess little non-hypocritical room to belittle Noonan for so consistently belittling the Obama administration. But my confession comes with an expectation of mercy.
For I recall my borderline praise of Bush II as it seemed to be pondering its options throughout the immediate post-9/11 weeks, rather than instantly committing grounds troops to Afghanistan, which I deplored as a potentially insane act of endless commitment. In other words, as opposed as I was to the very idea of a bumbling, unelected W. in the WH, I was willing to give him the benefit of my doubts.
As did, I further confess, Ms. Noonan toward the newly elected Barack Obama. Indeed she was uncharacteristically warm toward both the Democratic nominee and inaugurated president. So, in that, she deserves the same mercy for which I pleaded.
But I never ever pretended, once well into W.'s administration, that only in recent weeks had I "begun to worry about the basic competency of the administration." Peggy, however, can write such tripe in the apparent absence of even the vaguest self-awareness. It's really quite astonishing.
